Peter Walker completed an MA in photography in 2008 at Bolton University and has further developed a keen interest in social documentary photography

In 2009 Peter was jointly commissioned by Oldham Council’s ‘Gateways to Oldham’ team and the Housing Market Renewal pathfinder project to create a photographic record of the environment, history and community of the Primrose Bank estate.

Working with residents and community groups, Peter has created images that bear witness to the cultural and social diversity of a changing community.

The photographs taken over the course of a year portray the changing face of the estate and the changing community - from a stark 1960s concrete council housing estate, towards a twenty first century place to live. Peter has recorded surprising images that are both beautiful and powerful, and these are complimented by a vision of the latest proposals to regenerate the estate.

Photo MA graduate Andy Boag exhibition Landscapes In Brass' premieres at Holmfirth Picturedrome. The Debut performance of the National Lottery Funded commission of music and images will be on Sunday June 6th as part of Holmfirth Art Week. The piece is in three movements; the landscape & culture, The Black death in Hepworth and The bursting of Bilberry Reservoir in 1852 resulting in 81 dead. Photographs will form a slideshow to illustrate the musical passages. The band will perform the piece and various locations throughout the country.

Speakers include

Shirley Baker
Born in Kersal, North Salford, and moved to Manchester at the age of two.
Her photography began in the early sixties with a compulsion to record “the face of a people at a time when their homes were being demolished and they were being uprooted due to a huge 'slum' clearance programme.”
She has worked as an industrial photographer, a freelance writer and photographer on various magazines, books and newspapers, and as a lecturer at Salford College of Art and Manchester Polytechnic. Her work on Salford “Streets & Spaces Urban photography was published in 2000 by the Lowry Press.

Ian Beesley
Born Bradford West Yorkshire.
Began photographing in the 1970s the demise of the textile trade, this has developed into a longitudinal socio-political study of the demise of industry and its effects on society. He is the course leader for the MA in photography at the University of Bolton. Nominated for the Fellow in Photography at the National Media Museum in 2008, he is currently working with the poet Ian McMillan on a number of projects including “The Drift” an exhibition and book about one of the last coal mines in the Yorkshire coalfield.

Paul Reas
Born Bradford West Yorkshire
is a senior lecturer in Documentary Photography at the University of Wales Newport. He has, for the last twenty years, had a deliberately varied photographic career. He has exhibited widely, both Nationally and Internationally, and his work has been included in many major survey exhibitions of British Photography, the most recent being ‘How We Are’ photographing Britain, at Tate Britain in 2007. He has published two books, I Can Help’ and ‘Flogging A Dead Horse’. Both Cornerhouse Books publications.

Martin Wainwright

Born in Leeds
is Northern editor of the Guardian. His latest book True North rather than dwell on a Bennett-esque, Billy Liar and Satanic Mills pastiche of northern England he aims to provide a more balanced view of the region.

Subtitled In Praise of England's Better Half, it's a personal analysis of a corner of the country which boasts breathtaking countryside, dynamic industry, high culture, community spirit and a very real multi-cultural, cosmopolitan lifestyle.

Nick Kozak Puts on Haiti Earthquake Exibition

Broke, an exhibition of photos from post-quake Haiti by Photo MA graduate Nick Kozak features 28 photographs of nearly 2000 shot between January 18 and 22, days after the massive earthquake, on display at 52 McCaul in Toronto. The concept of Fix runs in conjunction with the exhibition; a fundraising initiative with all proceeds and donations going to CARE Canada's work in Haiti. The show runs from March 3-14 and thus far has raised over $5000.00.

The show also features a large print that was torn into 54 pieces and distributed in special invites to people around Toronto. Invitees were asked to bring the pieces back and participate in fundraising and dialogue about Haiti.

The show has received quite a bit of attention and Nick was invited to speak about his experiences on CBC Radio.

Adam Dean Closes in on Awards

Congratulations to Adam Dean whose work from Afghanistan has been shortlisted for the 2010 Sony World Photography Awards in the Current Affairs category and will be exhibited in Cannes, France in April. He was also shortlisted in the top 5 for the POYI Magazine/Agency photographer of the year.

Adam continues to be based in Beijing and works regularly for Bloomberg and the Daily Telegraph as well as occasional commissions for other leading newspapers and magazines. He will be heading to Mongolia on 4th March until 20th March then returning to Beijing before heading back to Afghanistan from 19 April for the summer.

Photo MA graduate Boris Austin just completed a workshop training UNICEF staff in photography. Boris explains the process, "the overall goal was to equip team members with the skills and knowledge to take high quality documentary-style digital photography including portraits whilst in the field. Images will be used in UNICEF’s publications and reports.

The intensive workshop focused on environmental portraiture and photo essays, both technically and creatively. The participants were staff journalists who had specialities such as "water and sanitation" or "public health and immunization" so we also took into account the specific kinds of photos each of them would need to learn to take. The heads of Communications team watched a final presentation and said they thought is was highly successful".

Nick Kozak Illustrates Catalogue

Photo MA Graduate Nick Kozak has recently completed illustrating a catalogue for a major art exhibition in Toronto. The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery in Toronto commissioned internationally acclaimed video artist Candice Breitz to complete a project in Toronto for her Same Same exhibition, which also features 10 of her previous works. Factum, a project about identical twins was filmed between May and June 2009. Nick Kozak documented the process. The Power Plant catalogue for the show contains over a 100 of Nick's images and provides a unique and complementary (to the actual video installations) look at the project.

Becky and Claire publish in Marie Claire

Clare Struthers and Becky Matthews traveled to Uganda in January 2009 to cover the seminal mass wedding of six Acholi tribes women in an Internally Displaced Persons camp in Pader. The wedding was possible thanks to the generous donation of 54 wedding dresses by brides from Lancashire. This act of generosity acts as a symbol of hope for a community ripped apart by two decades of civil war.

Their story is being told in this month's (October) edition of Marie Claire magazine pages 19, and 124-128. Unfortunately the magazine managed to omit Clare's byline but this was a joint project from start to finish.

The image is from the series "My Big Fat Ugandan Wedding" has also won a "Highly Commended" in the "Quality of Life" category of the CIWEM’s Environmental Photographer of the Year 2009 competition. The work will be exhibited at the Bedfordbury Gallery in London's Covent Garden before going on tour around the country.

THE HUMPHREY SPENDER JOHN MARRIOT SCHOLARSHIP FOR SOCIAL DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY 2009

The Spender archive of photographs from Mass Observation’s Work Town project is regarded internationally as one of the most important archives in the development of British documentary photography. As part of the University of Bolton and Bolton Council’s initiative to develop a research centre based around the Spender archive, the University is proud to announce the launch of the Humphrey Spender John Marriot scholarship for social documentary photography.

The aim of the scholarship is to enable a recent postgraduate photography student to produce a sustained body of social documentary photography that re-interprets and contextualises some of the images/issues held within the Work Town archive.

Submissions for the scholarship 2009/10 are invited on the theme of ’”holidays”’
(Holidays in this context are defined as official or unofficial observances of religious, national, or cultural significance, often accompanied by celebrations or festivities and or a general leave of absence from a regular occupation for rest or recreation - but only within the area of Bolton).

Applicants must research the relevant Spender images held in the archive at Bolton Museum and Art Gallery. In addition they must submit a written proposal (one side of A4) for the re-interpretation and contextualisation of the theme holiday, along with a brief CV and a portfolio of no more than 8 images.

Criteria
• Applicant must have studied at postgraduate level;
• Must reside in the North West;
• All the work produced MUST be within Bolton Council geographic boundaries that Humphrey Spender worked in.

Outcomes
• An exhibition of the work;
• Successful applicant to deliver a paper at the Spender conference;
• Successful applicant to deliver a number of workshop or talks to current postgraduate and undergraduate students, Rotary Club Bolton Le Moors, Marriot Trust. All workshops will acknowledge the Marriot as the donor trust;
• Keep a detailed journal of the project, again the photographer will acknowledge the donor trust.
• Contacts of all the work and a selection of exhibition prints to be deposited in the Museum archive;
• The photographer will retain the copyright, however the University of Bolton and Bolton Council will reserve the right of free access to publish any of the images in relation to the scholarship, the archive, the research centre and studying at the University.

Fee
Photographers fee £3,000 plus £1,000 for materials

Photo MA graduate Gemma Thorpe has been awarded the Mary Clerc Scholarship -'awarded to an applicant with a keen social conscious who works with passion and purpose', which will enable her to participate in the Missouri Photo Workshop at the end of September this year.

Presented by Redeye in partnership with The University of Bolton and Chetham’s Library.

Supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

This is the first gathering of its kind in the UK for ideas and discussion about photography, featuring a wide range of sessions by and for photographers.

It is Redeye's major event for 2009 and is an unmissable weekend for those who are serious about photography.

It is aimed at photographers who are interested in the way the profession is going, who are looking for ideas from their own and different disciplines, and would like an opportunity to discuss these ideas with some of the leading figures in photography. It will also be useful to all those who work with, buy or teach photography.

Why's it needed? Many people have told us that they would enjoy the chance to meet with colleagues to discuss new ideas and developments in photography. And lots of people are saying there are some critical things that are not getting discussed properly. While there are several excellent single-issue academic conferences, there is no clear gathering in this country for people working in photography to get together and talk about the things that are most important to them.

What's going to happen? The weekend includes around 20 different events – debates, keynote presentations, panel sessions, and more offbeat activities – with various threads running throughout – fine art, publishing, museum and archives, photojournalism and documentary, community, editorial and commercial. You can follow your specialist area or mix and match from different themes. There’ll be plenty of opportunities for networking and chatting in convivial surroundings. We will also have some hands-on and fun sessions.

Most formal sessions will be recorded for podcasting, so you don’t need to worry about missing something. A detailed report will provide a reference for later use. ...more

If the fusion of video cameras and dSLRs hadn't blurred enough before, Esquire shot their June issue cover of Megan Fox in video—a purported first in the magazine world.

Rather than click and endless series of stills, photographer Greg Williams shot the cover with the 4K Red ONE video camera. Fox essentially acted out a scene for 10 minutes, the best moment of which will appear on the June 2009 cover. (Not to be wasteful of Megan Fox footage, the video will also be uploaded to Esquire's site, of course.)

First Canon 5D Workshop in China

In the first week of May 2009, 24 professional Chinese photojournalists gathered in Hangzhou for a four day conversion workshop with Canon's new 5D MKII. Sponsored by Canon (who provided the venue, cameras and microphones) and the University of Bolton (who organised the workshop content) four tutors Huang Wen, Chang He, Wang Xi and D J Clark collaborated with the participants to discover the potential of using the camera as a short form multi media journalism tool.

The workshop was one of a series being run to fund a new £5,000 award in Chinese Multi Media Journalism just announced at www.yxaward.org.

The London School of Economics is commissioning photographers to shoot a story on issues around poverty and its representation, past and present. The photographers selected will be paid £2,000 for their work, which will be exhibited at the LSE next year. Applications are invited from photographers who are either from or living in the following cities:

London, Kinshasa, Mumbai, Istanbul, New York, Jakarta, Cairo and Shanghai.

Selection will be based on the best ideas/approaches submitted for any four of the eight cities highlighted above. The deadline for submission of ideas is 16 June 2008. Successful entrants will be contacted by 4 July. The deadline for final submission of all assignments is 29 August 2008.

The continuing belief by some publishing execs that, eventually, some mythical e-reader standard will rescue the business is misguided. In a quest for reach, newspapers have spent the last 10 years divorcing their bits from the shackles of atoms. Now that their intrinsic content is freely available via any number of outlets, there’s no easy way to recoup any money by once again locking their text behind the tyranny of tangible form.

This longing for an “iPod moment”, replicating the boost Apple’s iTunes Store gave to record labels, is understandable from dyed-in-the-wool print veterans, for whom e-readers comfortably reimagine the humble book, magazine, even newsprint. But the faith is retrograde - Amazon’s Kindle is all well and good, but do consumers really want to carry yet another gadget that does only one job, when mobile phones, netbooks and a dozen yet-to-materialise devices offer the same content and more for free? ...more

"Thames town is an English style new satellite town built close to Shanghai as part of the local governments ‘One City –Nine Towns’ plan. This plan was hatched out of the population boom being experienced in Shanghai. In the past 15 years the population has increased by 8 million and the landmass it covers has increased from 100sqkm to a staggering 680sqkm. Despite this growth Shanghai is still four times as densely populated as New York. The ‘One City –Nine Towns’ plan seeks to construct nine satellite towns around Shanghai. Six of these towns are to be themed on European style cities from the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Sweden, and Italy. - For students wishing to make something meaningful from their travel or personal photography -

Explore the creation of visual narratives and combine your photos with music and typography to create multimedia slideshows. Then learn how to publish your stories to the internet for all to see.

This course gives the beginner or amateur photographer the chance to make stories from their work. Whether you want to share your travel adventures with friends and family back home, have a specific personal or artistic project that you would like to undertake or even start to develop your work into a portfolio.

My aim is to help you explore your creativity and ideas whilst providing you with all the technical knowhow in a simplified hands on approach. Visual demonstrations are given in a workshop environment and students are personally aided in creating their slideshows to share with the group.

Course Requirements : You will need to bring your digital photos ready to use on a Laptop plus some headphones (normal ipod headphones or similar is fine). If you would like to use your own music please bring that with you. (an mp3 file is fine) . The slideshow software you need will be provided for your MAC or PC. We will also provide you with a specially made DVD containing extra material for you to use such as music, audio samples, fonts and imagery to help you get the most out of this experience.

Workshops will run from 10am – 4pm each day.
( 5 Hours with 1 hour for lunch )
