Newspaper as television

[This is a cross posting with David Campbell's personal web site and blog, now available at www.david-campbell.org, with content and postings on photography, multimedia and politics.]

The media landscape is changing radically. When The Guardian (rightly) wins a Broadcast News award for its July 2008 video on Zimbabwe’s rigged election – which was posted on the newspapers web site before being shown on BBC television – then we have proof that the barriers between print, on-line and television are being blurred by multimedia.

This convergence is not without its problems. The mainstream media is using ‘clickstream’ data on what drives digital consumers to their site in a way that could see more of the same superficial journalism in more outlets.

According to Andrew Currah of Oxford University; “A paradox of the 24/7 media environment is that - owing to the integration of newsrooms, and the duplication of stories across print, broadcast and online - the news agenda has become more homogeneous, despite there being more channels through which to access it.”

The work of The Guardian, and independent producers like MediaStorm, shows that creative and challenging stories can be produced and distributed. It’s up to the mainstream digital media to use the technological opportunities to do something similar.

Getty and Flickr

"Getty Images has started recruiting Flickr users as it prepares for the launch of its new collection of images sourced from the social networking website." There appears to be no way of asking for Getty to look at your work for potential representation, you just post to Flickr and hope they see you. ...more

However the deal is not as sweet as it looks as although the deal suggests a standard deal to all photographers (30% of the price), Getty looks to be looking for ways to boost its microstock, which may mean just 20p an image sold (by my calculation). Newpapers may seek charity funding

"Could newspapers and local broadcasters begin seeking philanthropic support from the civic foundations and private donors that are starting to bankroll news non-profits? It appears entirely likely. 009 EUROPEAN PUBLISHERS AWARD FOR PHOTOGRAPHY

The European Publishers Award for Photography, now in its 16th year, is a major initiative to encourage the publication of contemporary photography.

We are delighted to announce that the 2009 European Publishers Award For Photography will be sponsored by Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG. The company is known world-wide for its Heidelberg printing presses which are recognised as being synomous with the highest quality of offset printing.

The 2009 Jury will be held in Rome. Peliti Associati will be the Project Leader.

Open to photographers worldwide, the competition is a unique collaboration between six European Publishers – Actes Sud (France), Apeiron (Greece), Dewi Lewis Publishing (United Kingdom), Edition Braus (Germany), Lunwerg Editores (Spain) and Peliti Associati (Italy).

The competition requires the submission of a substantial, completed and unpublished photographic book project. The winning project is then published in book form simultaneously by each of the publishers in their own country and in their own language, resulting in perhaps the most extensive cultural collaboration currently existing in Europe.

The winning book will be published in autumn 2009. ...more

PhD Studentship

Applications are invited for a 3-year full-time PhD studentship to be held at University College London in the field of Museum Studies / Museum Anthropology / Digital Heritage. The studentship is associated with a large project funded under the Arts & Humanities Research Council’s ‘Beyond Text’ programme, which is concerned with innovating ‘digital curatorship’ in relation to Sierra Leonean collections dispersed in the global museumscape. The project considers how objects that have become isolated from the oral and performative contexts that originally animated them can be reanimated in digital space alongside associated images, video clips, sounds, texts and other media. In partnership with the Department of Informatics at Sussex University, as well as the British Museum, Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, Glasgow Museums and collaborating institutions in Sierra Leone, a digital heritage resource will be created that utilizes social networking technologies to reconnect objects with disparate communities and foster reciprocal knowledge exchange across boundaries. Whereas the practice of ‘digital repatriation’ has become increasingly popular with museums, the reception of such initiatives by source communities has not been critically assessed. Thus, a crucial part of the project will be to employ innovative participatory methods to pilot and evaluate the digital resource in Sierra Leone. ...more
